Surah At-Taubah, Ayat 23-24

Ayat 23. O you who believe! Take not for allies (supporters and helpers) your fathers and your brothers if they prefer disbelief to Belief. And whoever of you does so, then he is one of the Zâlimûn (wrong-doers, etc.).

Ayat 24. Say: If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your kindred, the wealth that you have gained, the commerce in which you fear a decline, and the dwellings in which you delight ... are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger, and striving hard and fighting in His Cause , then wait until Allah brings about His Decision (torment). And Allah guides not the people who are Al-Fasiqun (the rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) saying, "Man follows his friend's religion, you should be careful who you take for friends".[At-Tirmidhi Hadith # 4833 and Abu Dawud Hadith # 2378].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah At-Taubah Ayat 23. O you who believe! Take not for allies (supporters and helpers) your fathers and your brothers if they prefer disbelief to Belief. And whoever of you does so, then he is one of the Zâlimûn (wrong-doers, etc.). This Hadith also induces one to avoid the company of impious people and seek the association of the pious persons. This Hadith forbids Muslims from befriending infidels and stresses that they should establish a bond of friendship and fraternity with the pious persons only. The above Hadith signifies that taking believers for company has good consequences on the Muslim.
